Watch Spain vs Costa Rica Live

The 2023 Women’s World Cup campaign for Spain Women will begin on Friday when they take on Costa Rica Women at the Wellington Regional Stadium.

La Roja is getting ready for their third World Cup appearance, and Costa Rica is getting ready for their second appearance.

Spain hopes to advance further in the competition this time around after being knocked out in the group stage in 2015 and the last 16 in France four years ago.
However, a letter issued by 15 players in September of last year protesting head coach Jorge Vilda and the circumstances in the national setup has overshadowed their tournament preparations.

As a result, 15 players declared themselves unavailable for selection, and Vilda received support from the Spanish federation, leading to a protracted disagreement.

Ona Batlle and Aitana Bonmati are two players who have joined the national team again, and La Roja is now concentrating on the World Cup group stage where they will face Costa Rica, Zambia, and Japan.

Spain will enter its first game riding a six-game winning streak after hammering Vietnam 9-0 in their final warm-up match.

While all is going on, Costa Rica is getting ready for their second World Cup appearance after qualifying for Australia and New Zealand by winning the 2022 CONCACAF Championship.
In their lone prior appearance at a World Cup in 2015, they were ousted in the group stage after earning just two points from their three games.

Costa Rica, incidentally, drew 1-1 with Spain to open the 2015 tournament, and they would be happy with a similar outcome on Friday.
However, their recent performance implies that they may find it challenging to claim a successful outcome. In their last 11 games, they have won one, drawn two, and lost eight times.

Their lone triumph during that time came against Haiti at the Central American and Caribbean Games earlier this month, but they were unable to build on it as they lost 2-0 to South Africa in a World Cup warm-up match.
