When Guinea-Bissau plays Nigeria at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium on Monday, they want to avoid losing in the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations for the fourth time in a row.

Even though Djurtus lost to both Equatorial Guinea and the Ivory Coast, they still have a chance to advance as one of the top third-place teams if they defeat Nigeria in the last round of Group A matches.

After falling short 4-2 against top-seeded Equatorial Guinea on Thursday, Guinea-Bissau’s chances of qualifying for AFCON 2023 look dire.

In addition to finishing last in Group A, Baciro Cande’s team’s -4 goal differential might make things more difficult should they manage to overcome the Super Eagles on Monday.

Djurtus had never played a fourth game at the Cup of Nations, despite having participated in three AFCONs prior to this year’s championships; only a victory over Jose Peseiro’s team would provide them a chance to change the situation.

Surprisingly, in March 2023, Guinea-Bissau shocked the giants at home by defeating them 1-0 in the qualifying round. A repeat performance would be highly recommended.

Cande hopes a repetition is avoided against Nigeria in order to have any chance of competing in the round of 16. He laments his team’s careless finishing before the Equatoguineans took control in Thursday’s setback.

Regarding the Super Eagles, they have to be ready for Monday’s pivotal match in order to qualify, since they have won three times already.

Peseiro’s team is in control after defeating Ivory Coast 1-0 in front of a biased crowd; four points should be plenty to guarantee a spot in the first round of elimination.

On Thursday, the Portuguese tactician shocked both the host country and spectators by switching from a 4-2-3-1 to a 5-4-1, and it is unclear if the trainer would stick with the same strategy in their last Group B match.

Even though the Super Eagles might finish first with a win, the African giants need to improve their scoring after missing several excellent opportunities in the draw with Equatorial Guinea and even if they defeated the Elephants.
