Egypt is set to face Mozambique in their opening match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny this Sunday.
Having won the AFCON title seven times and being the runners-up in the last edition, Egypt is in good form with a five-game unbeaten streak across all competitions. They prepared for the campaign with a 2-0 victory against Tanzania in a friendly last week.
Mozambique returns to the continental competition’s group stage after a 14-year absence. Despite not advancing past the group stage in their four previous appearances, they showed promise in two recent friendlies, winning 2-0 against Lesotho and drawing 1-1 with Botswana.
Both teams are in Group B with Ghana and Cape Verde. Egypt is heavily favored to top the group and aims to begin the campaign with a victory.
In their five previous competitive meetings, Egypt has a flawless record against Mozambique, scoring nine goals. The last encounter in the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers saw Egypt winning 3-0 on aggregate.
Mozambique has faced Egypt three times in AFCON, suffering 2-0 defeats in the group stage of the 1986, 1998, and 2010 editions. Unfortunately, Mozambique has had a winless streak in their 12 group-stage games over four AFCON editions, enduring 10 defeats and scoring only four goals while conceding 24.
