While their hosts finally secured their first win but are still mired at the bottom of Group D, the Croatians made two mistakes in October that caused them to lose their hold on automatic qualifying.
Usually a mainstay at the very top of big competitions, Croatia’s recent losses have cast doubt on their attendance at the European Championship finals in the summer after they finished third in Group D following losses to Wales and Turkey.
After losing 2-1 in Cardiff the previous game, the World Cup finalists from 2018 and the bronze medalists from Qatar the previous year, led by veteran coach Zlatko Dalic’s team, are tied for second position with Wales, but they have a worse head-to-head record against Rob Page’s team.
